If you are looking for a way to increase your value in the marketplace and to be able to have your choice of jobs in the healthcare field, then obtaining an LPN degree is one of the surest ways. When most people think about a degree in healthcare, they think about getting RN (Registered Nurse) training. Although this is an excellent degree with a high salary, it's not the only way to go. An alternative route is to get LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) training. This can actually have many benefits over an RN degree - both in the short term and in the long term. Let's take a look at why LPN courses may be the best solution, even if you ultimately want to become an RN.

1. Shorter Training Time

To become an LPN, the amount of training you need is a fraction of that needed to become an RN. RN programs typically last a full 4 years. LPN training, by contrast, can sometimes be less than one year. By the time someone finishes their traditional nursing training, you could have already been working in the healthcare industry for 3 years. This is particularly important if you are looking for the skills to get a job immediately. Of course, RNs make about twice as much money as LPNs. However, just because you become an LPN, it doesn't mean that you can never obtain a second degree and continue moving up the hierarchy.

2. Excellent Stepping Stone

One of the best reasons that an LPN is so valuable is that it may be the best stepping stone to a full RN. Once you are in a hospital practicing medicine as an LPN, you will be gaining valuable real world experience about how the healthcare industry really works. You will be working with real patients and real doctors on a day-to-day basis. While you are working as an LPN, there is absolutely no reason that you couldn't be taking RN classes online. Furthermore, these classes may seem trivial to you because you have the experience. You'll be able to breeze through these classes with flying colors.

There can be no doubt that LPN courses are probably the best way to get your foot in the door in the healthcare industry. You'll get to work with doctors and patients everyday, and you'll gain valuable skills that will only continue to improve your career for the rest of your life.

Not everyone is cut out to be a licensed clinical nurse or LPN. In addition to the educational requirements and licensing exams, it takes a very special person to want to take care of the sick. Not only is it a hard job physically, but it can be hard mentally as well. Do you think you have what it takes? Let's take a look at the requirements and find out.

Education
While educational requirements can vary by state, the basics are very similar. First, you must have either graduated high school or successfully passed your GED class before you can even start. You will need to complete a LPN course that is accredited by your state's Board of Nurses. Most vocational schools and community colleges offer LPN classes, but you might also want to look into the programs offered by a teaching hospital if you are lucky enough to live near one. The areas of study to meet the LPN requirements will include anatomy, biology, chemistry, nutrition, obstetrics, and pediatrics. Before you complete the course, you will also have a period of practical training in the field. In most situations, you will go to a local nursing home or hospital to apply what you have learned. This may give you a real idea of whether or not this is the right career move for you.

Licensing
After you have completed the LPN training program, you will have to pass the NCLEX-PN exam. While the educational requirements may vary from one state to the next, all states require you to pass this exam before you can begin your work as an LPN.

Unofficial Requirements
After you've completed the LPN course and passed your exam, you are legally able to work as an LPN. However, there is more to this job than just meeting those LPN requirements. Nursing is a very physical job. Your duties will require you to stand on your feet for most of the day, and you will also spend a lot of time supporting and lifting patients who aren’t well enough to perform those tasks by themselves. The mental requirements may be even more stringent. You will be dealing with instructions from both doctors and other nurses while also trying to meet your patient’s demands. Some patients will be cooperative, but others may be argumentative or even combative. During all of the chaos, you will still have to make sure that all instructions are carried out to the letter; someone's life could very well depend on it. The ability to remain calm under pressure is just as important as becoming a certified LPN.

LPN certification, or licensed practical nurse certification, is a nursing certification that generally takes one year to complete. LPNs work with physicians and registered nurses to effectively take care of hospital patients and those residing in convalescent homes. Licensed practical nurses are responsible for dressing wounds, answering patient questions, checking patient's vitals, collecting testing samples from patients, and performing laboratory tests on such samples.

The ideal LPN is one that enjoys working with people, is continually compassionate, and enjoys working within a changing environment. On the job, no two days of an LPN's career is the same. While this may be stressful for some, those truly cut out for life as an LPN will thrive off of the energy and changing responsibilities that are part of the job description.

What Does LPN Certification Entail?

To become an LPN, one must complete a training program at a suitable community college or vocational school. Once a potential LPN has completed the required training program, he or she may then begin to prepare for the NCLEX-PN, or LPN licensing exam. To prepare for this exam, it may be a good idea for students to enroll in a review course. Most review courses are anywhere from eight to fifteen weeks long and can greatly help a student prepare for the NCLEX-PN. If a student finds it inconvenient to enroll in a review course, an exam review may be obtained through the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The LPN licensing exam is a rather difficult exam and must be passed with a .42 out of a perfect .50. In addition to being difficult, the NCLEX-PN costs students approximately $200.00, which is not refundable if the student were to fail the exam.

Life After LPN Certification

Once a student has passed the NCLEX-PN, he or she has then earned their LPN certification and may then practice as an LPN. LPNs can generally expect to find employment in a hospital or convalescent home. While many jobs are becoming scarce, the LPN position is expected to continue growing as the need for health care is always present. Not only can future LPNs expect to find employment, they may expect to be compensated quite nicely. On average, LPNs are currently earning around $36,500 a year. Therefore, a career as an LPN is not only a good choice for those interested in entering the health care field, but is a choice that can help students secure a bright future in a respectable career.

When many companies are downsizing and the economy is not in the best shape finding a new career path may be necessary. The healthcare field is desperately seeking individuals to file a large variety of positions that they have available. This is definitely a vocational area to research when you are looking for jobs.

One problem that seems to plague many people and their families is the time that is required to pursue degrees in a new field. Various vocational programs can take many years of college classes before completing the training programs. However, earning a degree as a licensed practical nurse can be completed in as little as twelve months. This means that for someone who is receiving unemployment compensation you can work on getting your lpn license while receiving your financial benefits.

Most colleges and universities offer specialized training programs designed to help an individual gain all of the necessary skills and training required to complete the duties of a licensed practical nurse successfully. This includes the ability to aide in the care for patients of medical offices, who are admitted to a hospital setting, nursing homes, adult foster care facilities and even within a patient’s own home. The opportunities available when you earn your license as an LPN are limitless and can be designed to fit your specific needs and schedules.

Some of the requirements a person must possess when they want to work on getting their LPN license includes the ability to work compassionately with other people. Not only will the LPN be working with the patient directly they must also know how to handle the situations both physically and emotionally that the family of the patient is going through. Licensed Practical Nurses should be able to stay focused in emergency situations so that they can perform their job duties to the best of their abilities. An LPN must also be able to retain knowledge and skills and remember what they learned when the situation presents itself and must be dealt with.

Some of the areas within the medical field that an LPN work include assisting within the Obstetrics field by helping in the maternity ward of a hospital or as a baby nurse within a private home setting. Some choose to work solely with elderly patients to help the patient complete necessary personal care needs that are a must for daily living. It is also an option of a licensed practical nurse to work for a variety of medical care areas by seeking employment in a home health agency and working with the needs of various patients.

If you are just getting started in the nursing profession, then you have probably loathed the idea that it can take so long to become a licensed nurse. Do you really have to wait 4 years before you can jump into the fray? The answer is no - you don't necessarily need to wait or study so long before you can begin practicing nursing. The secret is to obtain an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) degree. These degrees can be obtained in a fraction of the time as an RN degree. If your goal is to eventually become a full RN, then you can use an LPN as a great stepping stone. You'll be able to get on-the-job experience and training that will help you fly through your RN training.

The most efficient way to get your LPN is through online LPN programs. Let's take a look at why this is the case - and the benefits of an online program.

1. No Waiting List

If you have contacted your local vocational college about their nursing programs, then you have probably become extremely frustrated that there always seems to be a waiting list. If nurses are in such high demand, then it seems silly that they should make everyone wait before they can start getting their education. The good news is that online classes don't suffer from this limitation. You can enroll right away and begin taking your first course as soon as the next session begins.

2. Save Money

Online LPN programs typically can cost less than traditional programs. It's much cheaper for a school to provide instruction over the Internet than in a physical classroom. Even if the costs turn out to be roughly equivalent in your area, you'll still save a tremendous amount elsewhere. You won't have to waste gas every day as you commute to and from school. You won't need to purchase a parking permit at the college. You won't need to hire a baby-sitter or a day-care center for your children because you'll be able to stay at home with them.

3. Convenience

Finally, the convenience of online courses can't be ignored. Where else can you learn how to be a LPN in your pajamas? When you want to take a break, you can do so at any time with fearing that you will miss something.

Overall, online LPN programs are the best place to start your nursing career.

Whether a person desires to work in a busy hospital emergency room or a more relaxed environment such as home health care, becoming a LPN (licensed practical nurse) may be just the career to choose. As the population ages, LPN's are in demand. LPN training can help a person learn how to succeed in this rewarding career.

If a person is interested in becoming a licensed practical nurse, it is important to find a vocational college that offers LPN training. Generally this is a two year program with numerous hours of hands-on training and internships. Internships can be completed at various establishments, such as hospitals, nursing homes and general medicine clinics. Financial aid can also be available at the state and federal level for payment for the classes required for nursing students. In addition to traditional student loans and grants, there may be scholarships or tuition reimbursement available.

The classes a person would need to take to become a LPN may include general college courses, such as math, English, and computer classes. Generally these classes are completed before a person is able to enroll in the specific courses needed for LPN training. After general classes are completed, a person can expect to become enrolled in classes regarding human biology, anatomy, medical terminology, and CPR.

Once a person obtains their LPN degree, they are qualified to work in the health care field. Duties that a person could expect to perform as a LPN include administering shots, performing basic first aid and checking blood pressure. The specific duties that a LPN can or cannot perform can vary from each state.

When a person is deciding what career path to chose, it can be wise to consider becoming a licensed practical nurse. This career is in high demand and is expected to remain a career with high growth potential. There are many job opportunities for LPN's throughout the United States. In addition to the job outlook, this can be a rewarding career choice for many people. Many people have the desire to help others, and nursing offers the opportunity to help other people while getting a good salary and benefits.

Many people that strive to become nurses do so at a certain pace. The courses that are attended can take so many months to complete, after which comes certification and any other training that is needed on the job. For some, however, an accelerated LPN program becomes an option when striving to become an RN from LPN, providing the option to complete the appropriate coursework at a quicker pace. These programs will assist you in applying the LPN nursing skills you have learned and honed, while building new skills as an RN and a better understanding of the higher level of the position.

Why an Accelerated Program?
An accelerated LPN program is useful for those that demonstrate a desire to gain the education in less time. This is mostly to accommodate the high demand for nurses within the health care field, as well as provide a quick resort for those that excel within the licensed practical nurse arena and are able to grasp new skills and concepts quickly. For those that need a bit more instruction, an accelerated program may not be best as the courses will flow much quicker and there won’t be as much time dedicated to each. The testing and examination process does not change, however, ensuring that even with a faster program the skills are developed and tuned in the appropriate manner.

What is the Difference?
With any LPN to RN program, you will likely earn your ADN, Associate Degree in Nursing, or the BSN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. What the accelerated program does is allow you to earn these degrees in half the time, usually one to two years depending on the level, instead of two to four years. This allows you to take hold of your career much quicker while taking in the brunt of the program in a larger swallow, focusing on a quicker entry into the profession.

There are many people that opt for an accelerated program for LPNs in order to get into the field much quicker and satisfy the need for health care professionals. There is not a lesser quality to the education, and everything must be completed as with the typical programs, in order to ensure that nothing is skipped, missed, or ignored during the training and classes. Choosing an accelerated program will have you working within your desired field within a much shorter time than with other programs, but with the same level of education and skills.

There are nursing shortages in nearly every health care facility in the United States. Nursing homes, home care agencies and clinics are also in need of nursing staff. It has never been a better time to train for and earn a Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) degree, and you can do it by attending LPN programs online.

The nursing profession is one of the fasted growing careers in the country, and you can earn your LPN degree by research the many programs available online. You will receive the same intensive training as you would by attending a community college, vocational technical facility or hospital, but you can be flexible and have options that are not otherwise available to traditional in house studying. Students enrolled online receive the same basic courses in chemistry and biology that help prepare them for more advanced studies. Advanced courses include physical education, emergency medical care, anatomy, first aid, food and nutrition, psychological development, child growth and development and supervised clinical patient care.

If you work and still aspire to become part of the LPN profession, studying for your degree online is the way to go. It's a classroom built into your computer in your home. You'll submit assignments, read relevant text, submit papers just like you would if you were physically attending classes. You'll also participate in online lectures, video conferencing, discussion via emails and have the enriching experiences of chatting online with your fellow students. Practical training can be arranged through a local health care facility using guidelines provided by the online program LPN you are enrolled in.

By searching the Internet you will find many colleges and school that offer online LPN degree programs, which are accredited by the state's Board of Nursing. They will provide you with information about programs, fees, financial assistance and details regarding their practical and clinical experience.

In order to meet the requirements for an LPN program, you must have a high school diploma. The program takes approximately one year. Following successful completion LPN programs online, students must take and pass the National Council Licensure Exam, or NCLEX-PN. This is followed by the state licensing exam.

Help yourself help others by earning your LPN degree online.

If you are looking to further your education, and if you are looking at second degrees; then there is no better place to look than the healthcare industry. The future looks extremely bright for healthcare. As the baby boomer generation continues to age, there is no doubt that there will be a high demand in hospitals for healthcare workers like RNs and LPNs. If you want to really jump start your career opportunities in this hot industry, then your best possible bet is to invest in LPN continuing education. Let's take a look at how you might go about this.

1. Enroll in Classes

The first place you should check for LPN training is your local vocational college. They probably offer many programs dedicated to LPN and other nursing degrees. Ideally, you'll be able to begin your training as soon as the next session starts. If these classes aren't available in your area, then you may need to look at surrounding areas and colleges. If you are still young and aren't yet tied down with a family, then you might consider moving. Unfortunately, even if your local college offers classes, sometimes there is a waiting list. If you'd like, you can sign up for this waiting list; if you'd really like to set your career in motion, then you might consider signing up for online classes where this isn't so much of a problem.

2. Get the Training

Your training will consist of two major aspects. There will be classroom instruction - where you will learn about facts, theories, and knowledge within the healthcare profession. You will be expected to show that you have mastered this with in-class tests. There will also be hands-on training in real hospital and laboratory settings. This is where you will learn the practical knowledge that you will need to succeed in your upcoming job.

3. Get a Job

Once your training is completed, you will be licensed to be able to get a job as a practical nurse. This can be the most rewarding part of the entire process. You will get to work with real doctors, and you will be able to care for and help real patients. LPN continuing education is one of the best ways to further your education so that you can compete in today's job marketplace. Not only will it get you a great job, but it will be an excellent stepping stone to get even more medical training in the future.
